Integrating Media Selection and Media Effects Using Decision Theory

چکیده
Abstract. Media psychology researchers seek to understand both why people choose certain media over others and how influence cognitive, emotional, social, psychological processes. A burgeoning body of literature has emerged in recent years describing selection effects as reciprocally linked dynamic processes, but research approaches empirically investigating them such have been sparse. In parallel, technological developments like algorithmic personalization mobile computing served blur the lines between effects, highlighting novel problems at their intersection. Herein, we propose an integrative approach for building understanding these processes rooted decision theory, a formal framework organisms (and nonbiological agents) select optimize behaviors response environment.

This study proposes a behavioral complexity theory for media selection in global virtual teams. This theory captures multiple contingencies into one holistic approach. Unlike existing linear and mechanistic theories of media selection, this heuristic theory moves away from the universal models that were previously proposed. The behavioral complexity theory assumes ambiguity, complexity, and a n...

In an earlier period of mass communication research, scholars were more adventuresome in advancing ‘‘new’’ theories and less hesitant to ‘‘create’’ theory. The 1970s, in particular, bore witness to the emergence of several such theories—from the knowledge gap and agenda-setting to cultivation. Scholars have generated substantial literatures elaborating work in these and other traditions. Those ...
